The Key to the Database

Who is in the database?

The database consists of financial (d. financielle) and non-financial (d. ikke-financielle) parent companies (d. koncerner) situated in Denmark. The database does not include subsidiaries meaning companies in which a single parent company owns more than 50 percent.
We have made a few exceptions to this rule - when for instance a company only in a limited period was owned by another company and thus temporarily became a subsidiary.

Figures:

All monetary numbers are millions Danish Crowns (DKK) or millions Euro (EUR), unless otherwise stated.

Revenue - Non-Financial Companies:

Non-financial companies: Revenue (d. omsætning) is the total income of the company in the year, taken from the income statement.

Revenue - Financial Companies:

The Revenue of commercial banks (d. banker) and savings and loan institutions (d. sparekasser) is the Net Interest and Fee Income plus other Operating Income (d. nettorente- og gebyrindtægter samt Andre Ordinære Indtægter).
The Revenue of insurance companies (d. forsikringsselskaber) is the Gross Premiums Written (d. bruttopræmieindtægter).
The Revenue of mortgage banking (d. realkreditselskaber) and mortgage credit institutions (d. kreditforeningsselskaber) is the Interest Receivable (d. renteindtægter).

Result:

The result is given by earnings before tax (EBT) (d. resultat før skat) unless otherwise indicated in the database. The EBT in the database therefore includes amortisation (d. afskrivning) and financial adjustments (d. finansieringsomkostinger).

Assets:

Assets (d. aktiver (non-financial) d. statusbalance (financial)) are found on a company's balance sheet and can be divided into four sub-categories: fixed assets, current assets, intangible assets and liquid assets.
Fixed assets include land, machines and buildings; current assets consist of cash, money owed, stock, investments and work in progress; intangible assets are goodwill, trade marks, patents, etc; liquid assets are funds kept in cash or in a form that can be quickly and easily turned into cash

Equity:

Equity (d. egenkapital) is taken from a company's balance sheet. Equity will be for the whole group and mostly consists of share capital (d. aktiekapital) and reinvested earnings from the Income Statement (d. overført overskud fra resultatopgørelsen).

Share Capital:

Share capital (d. aktiekapital) is a component of a company's equity and can be found on the balance sheet. The share capital used in the database is that of the mother company.

Export:

Export (d. eksport) is defined as domestic Danish production, which is sold abroad. The definition of export might differ between companies. Export is therefore only showed on Company pages and not in the top 100 lists.

Employees:

The number of employees (d. antal ansatte) for each company is defined as the average number of employees over the current year in the group (parent company and all subsidiaries) worldwide.

GDP:

Danish Gross Domestic Product (d. BNP - Brutto National Product) for that particular year. It is included for comparison purposes.

Revenue 2004:

Shows the Revenue for the particular year in 2004 Crowners. The conversion is based on the official numbers for inflation - Consumer Price Index (d. forbrugerpristal-indekset) in Denmark, according to Danish Statistics (d. Danmarks Statistik) and the actual proxy is based on a compilation of these for all previous years (eg. 1,02 * 1,03 *1.02, etc).
The information can be found at www.dst.dk.

EBT ration:

The Earnings Before Tax ratio (d. overskudsgrad) is calculated by dividing Result with Revenue for each company each year.

Eq. Ratio:

The Equity Ratio (d. egenkapitalsgraden) is calculated by dividing Equity by total Assets. The Equity Ratio shows how much, in percentage, the Equity is of the total Assets. The remaining percentage is the Liabilities Ratio (d. gældsætningsgraden).

R.o.E:

Return on Equity (d. egenkapitalsafkast) is calculated by dividing result by equity and provides a picture of the relationship between the owners invested capital and the EBT of the company.

Subsidiary:

A subsidiary (d. datterselskab) is included in the figures of the parent company if the parent company has dominant ownership and voting rights (above 50%).
However, in some cases where a subsidiary has particular historic value on it own, or if the ownership is temporary, deviations from this principle occurs.

Corporate Governance Types:

Corporate governance is divided in four categories which mirrors four different corporate governance systems.
CEO & Chairman - Companies in which the chairman of the board (d. bestyrelsesformand) and the CEO are two different persons.
CEO=Chairman - Companies in which the chairman of the board (d. bestyrelsesformand) and daily manager (d. administrerende director) is the same person.
Collective management & chairman Companies with a chairman of the board (d. bestyrelsesformand) and a collective daily management (d. kollektiv ledelse).
Director General - Companies with a director general (d. generaldirektør).

Ownership Types:

Ownership is divided in seven categories which mirrors the structure of Danish companies.
